Sergio Ramos has tested positive for the corona virus, Real Madrid announced in a statement on Tuesday morning. The captain, who is recovering from a calf injury, will therefore miss the return in the quarterfinals of the Champions League against Liverpool on Wednesday evening. Ramos has to be in self-isolation for the next ten days and will have to watch from home how his team defends the 3-1 lead from the first leg against Jürgen Klopp’s team.

Real Madrid CF announces that Sergio Ramos has given a positive result from the last Covid-19 test conducted, Real said in the statement. The 35-year-old center-back must be in self-isolation for the next ten days and may only take action again if he manages to pass a negative corona test after that period. In addition to the match against Liverpool, Ramos will also not be available for the next two league matches against Getafe (April 18) and Cádiz (April 21), both away games.

The World Cup winner could return to the selection on April 24 when the team of trainer Zinedine Zidane takes on Real Betis in-house. However, that only applies if Ramos has fully recovered from the corona virus and its calf problems. Ramos last came into action on behalf of Real in the eighth finals of the Champions League against Atalanta. He then added a total of fifty minutes on behalf of the national team of Spain in the World Cup qualifying matches against Greece (1-1) and Kosovo (3-1 win).

Zidane is thin in the central defenders. Last week, just before the start of the first meeting with Liverpool, it was announced that Raphaël Varane was missing due to a positive corona test. He also had to win Clásico against Barcelona (2-1 win). That was a big setback for Zidane, who has not had access to Ramos for a long time in the heart of the defense. Against Barcelona, Nacho and Éder Militão were at the heart of the defense, as they did against Liverpool a week ago.
