NEC strikes again in the transfer market. The Nijmegen residents are renting Mikkel Duelund for a season from Dynamo Kiev, it is announced through the official channels. NEC has also negotiated an option to buy the 23-year-old attacker, for whom the Ukrainian top club paid four million euros in 2018.

Duelund is a two-legged winger who broke through at a young age at FC Midtjylland and made a big impression in the Danish competition. Dynamo Kiev paid a million sum for the attacker, who was then unable to meet expectations in Ukraine. Partly due to an ankle surgery, a foot injury and a corona infection, he only made 26 appearances in the main force in three seasons, in which he scored 3 times and provided 1 assist. Duelund is a multiple youth international for Denmark, but has not yet made his debut in the main force.

Technical director Ted van Leeuwen of NEC worked in Denmark for Esbjerg fB and knows Duelund from that time. “Mikkel Duelund was already remarkably good in FC Midtjylland’s great team,” says Van Leeuwen on the club site. “He is technically extremely skilled, fast, has a high speed of action and can score easily. He was only 18 years old, but played like a veteran. An attraction for the public.”

According to Van Leeuwen, it is understandable that Duelund no longer worked in Ukraine. “During his rehabilitation, Dynamo Kiev developed into the unapproachable champion of Ukraine. It is then difficult to return to that star team. That is where our chance to hire Mikkel lay. Here he can pick up game rhythm and put himself in the spotlight again.” Duelund is the fourth acquisition of NEC, which previously attracted midfielder Lasse Schöne (sc Heerenveen), right back Ilias Bronkhorst (Telstar) and goalkeeper Danny Vukovic (clubless).
