Cyriel Dessers has scored his first goal for Feyenoord. The mercenary of KRC Genk determined the final score in the top match against PSV on Sunday afternoon: 0-4. Dessers celebrated his goal at the corner flag, in front of the PSV supporters, and caused anger among the supporters of the home team. What followed was a beer shower. “My shirt still smells a bit like beer”, Dessers agrees with a laugh in conversation with ESPN.

“But that’s part of it,” the Belgian adds. “That makes such matches special, that’s why it’s alive. For me it’s a nice feeling when you score yourself.” The attacker saw from the bench that Feyenoord did not play so smoothly in the first half. PSV was the dominant party in phases of the first half, without creating serious chances. “In the second half we held up well after the lead. After a while you know that the spaces are getting bigger and that you are going to get chances. We finished them almost one hundred percent, that was great.”

As a newcomer, Dessers notices that Arne Slot’s playing style demands a lot from its players, he says. The striker, who also gave an assist to Jens Toornstra in his short substitute, can enjoy that. “I think it is good and that it works for the team. If you see how our captain Toornstra puts pressure on him every time and runs out, tens of meters, then I think that speaks for the team and for how the trainer wants to play.” He also hopes to play a bigger role in the coming period. “I would like to play as much as possible, but we have several good players and the trainer is the boss. You have to take the moments like today, then you have to show something. I did that, but it is only the first match in the Eredivisie.”
