The game between FC Emmen and Willem II ended undecided on Sunday afternoon. After 96 minutes of football, De Oude Meerdijk had a 1-1 score on the scoreboard, which was already established in the first fifteen minutes by goals from Michael de Leeuw and Mike Trésor Ndayishimiye. FC Emmen finally decided the game with ten men, after Glenn Bijl after an hour of play, partly thanks to the interference of the VAR, got a red card for a handball.

For Willem II, the adventure in the Europa League came to an end midweek, after a 0-4 defeat against Rangers FC. The Tilburg team collected three points from the first two matches, while opponent FC Emmen was still winless prior to the encounter. Still, the home team took the lead after five minutes of play. Marko Kolar turned up in the penalty area after a combination with Sergio Peña, after which his shot was initially turned by Willem II goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter. The rebound was then prey for Michael de Leeuw, who scored the opening goal.

FC Emmen could not enjoy the lead for a long time, because eight minutes later it was already right again. Vangelis Pavlidis kept an eye on FC Emmen goalkeeper Dennis Telgenkamp and brought Ndayishimiye into position, who pushed the ball into an empty goal. After the entertaining initial phase, an interesting match arose, in which there were opportunities to score from both sides. For example, Kolar hit the post on behalf of the home team and De Leeuw was just short of making his second of the afternoon, while Görkem Saglam shot just over.

Soon in the second half, FC Emmen seemed to receive a penalty after a duel between De Leeuw and Jo van den Avert, but after interference from the video referee, it was found that this was offside. The VAR demanded the lead again in minute 7, when referee Edwin van de Graaf was called to the screen because of a handball from Bijl. The fullback started a sliding and with his hand prevented Pavlidis from getting the passage towards the goal. Van de Graaf gave Bijl a red card, but put the ball outside the penalty area for a free kick.

With one man more Willem II was close to the lead a number of times. Ndayishimiye saw a shot turned, Saglam shot just wide and Mats Köhlert hit the crossbar with a volley. In the end of the game, the visitors looked emphatically for the win, but in the end there was no change in the tie. FC Emmen thus takes its first point of the Eredivisie season, while Willem II lifts his points total to four.
