Besiktas dealt a sensitive blow to Galatasaray on Monday evening. Sergen Yalçin’s team came out on top in the city derby, partly because Mostafa Mohamed missed a penalty in the final phase: 2-1. Besiktas therefore climbs to third place, four points behind leader Trabzonspor. Galatasaray remains in eighth place.

At Galatasaray, Patrick van Aanholt started in the base, while Ryan Babel was brought in after more than an hour of play. In the opening phase of the match, a free kick by Besiktas midfielder Miralem Pjanic landed on the crossbar from the sideline of the field, while Alex Texeira went just wide after some good preparatory work by Cyle Larin. Galatasaray hit the target with his first shot after more than half an hour of play. Alexandru Cicaldau took the ball well from the edge of the penalty area: 0-1.

Besiktas came back four minutes later thanks to Larin, who headed in a cross from Umut Meras from the left: 1-1. The home side striker took advantage of vacillating behavior from Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who misjudged and mistreated the situation. Larin also signed for the 2-1 in the 64th minute. The Canadian was able to tap the ball in from close by at the far post, after a corner from Pjanic had been head extended by Necip Uysal at the near post.

Galatasaray went looking for the equalizer and quickly came close via Halil Dervisoglu, who shot wide in a promising position. Ten minutes before the end, Fatih Terim’s team received a penalty after a handball by Domagoj Vida. Mohamed saw his penalty kick out of the corner by Ersin Destanoglu, allowing Besiktas to finally take the win.
