FC Midtjylland has everything but flawless preparation in the run-up to the meeting with PSV in the Champions League. The Danish club was hit by a corona outbreak last weekend and has to miss three players, the club announced on Monday. The new corona cases are reason for Midtjylland to tighten the protocols. The club also travels to Eindhoven on Tuesday instead of Monday. The club also takes as few people as possible, it announces.

Nicolas Madsen, Henrik Dalsgaard and Pione Sisto tested positive for the corona virus over the weekend. “Unfortunately, we have to admit that the players have been infected internally at the club and so we have decided to tighten the protocols and take further actions. Players and staff around the first team were previously tested three times a week, but will be tested as of today. The corona situation also means that the training facility in Ikast will be closed, so there will be no access for fans and media for the next few days.”

Sisto is one of the big names at Midjylland and was also absent from the league match against Viborg last weekend. Dalsgaard is also a basic player and will probably be replaced by Danie Hoegh. The latter has a history with sc Heerenveen, where he was under contract between 2017 and 2020. The suspected replacement for Sisto is also a former player of Heerenveen: Anders Dreyer. He was loaned to the Frisians by Brighton and Hove Albion in the 2019/20 season. Dreyer was accurate in the match against Ajax (1-2 loss) last season.

Midtjylland and PSV will first face each other in the Philips Stadium on Tuesday evening at 8 p.m., after which the return will take place in Denmark a week later. If they lose against the Danes, the Eindhoven team will move on to the group stage of the Europa League, while Roger Schmidt’s team can prepare for the play-offs of the Champions League if they win. In the latter case, PSV will face Spartak Moscow or Benfica, the draw in Nyon revealed on Monday. PSV settled fairly easily with Galatasaray in the second preliminary round over two matches.
