One of the most talked about moments of the match between the Netherlands and Montenegro (4-0) was the boy who stormed the field of the Philips Stadium in the final phase to take a selfie with Memphis Depay. Although the the Dutch striker does not welcome the action, he did grant the boy a photo. For the cameras of the NOS Depay looks back at the moment.
“I saw him coming from a long distance, I had already prepared for it,” says Depay. “It wasn’t a baby, but a boy of thirteen or something. You know it’s not supposed to be. But then, when he’s there… Then I’ll take a picture too.” Then Depay ordered the young fan to quickly return to the stands by giving him a nudge.
It reminded Depay of the incident surrounding Virgil van Dijk, who suddenly got a supporter at him during his interview on Wednesday after the game against Norway (1-1). Van Dijk pushed the fan away. “This is very different from what happened in Virgil’s last game,” Depay said. “Now when someone walks into my blind spot, I’m like: yo, get away for a while. I think you have to judge those two situations differently than someone who sees you coming from afar. That’s another time.”
