Memphis Depay is very pleased with the victory of the Dutch team. The eighth final duel with Romania was significantly better than the encounter with Austria, the attacker thinks.

“I think you want to recover as quickly as possible after a bad game and we did that today,” Memphis analyzed the game afterwards at ESPN.

The difference compared to the match against Austria (3-2 loss) was in the conviction in the duels and taking initiative on the ball, thinks Memphis, who played his 96th international match and thus equalled Arjen Robben.

“That sparkle is also there”, smiles the number two top scorer of the Dutch team of all time. “We should not pretend that it goes away after one match that went badly”, the attacker refers to the qualities of the Dutch team.

“We have to be satisfied today, look at the areas for improvement and continue.” Because there is still room for improvement, thinks Memphis. “In the first half you could have gone in at half-time with 0-2, 0-3. But in the end we did that in the second half.”

The victory means that the Dutch team will advance to the quarterfinals. There, the team of national coach Ronald Koeman will face Turkey or Austria. Earlier in this European Championship, the Netherlands of course played against the Austrians.

That duel was lost 3-2. Should the Austrians win against Turkey on Tuesday night, the chance of revenge beckons for Koeman and his men. But does Memphis have a preference as an opponent in the quarter finals?

“I don't care,” he answers in the negative. “You?” the attacker asks the question with a laugh ESPN-presenter Vincent Schildkamp. He doesn't care either. “We both just have to win.”

Memphis agrees wholeheartedly. “Whoever we face, we have to win. That is the only option,” concludes the now transfer-free striker.
