Mees Hoedemakers will continue to play at SC Cambuur for the time being. The controlling midfielder has decided to extend his contract with the PhD student until 2022 by one season. As a result, he will be stuck in Leeuwarden until at least the summer of 2023. Several clubs from home and abroad recently attracted Hoedemakers, who, however, prefers to continue his stay at Cambuur, which is returning to the highest level after five years.

“It has been two very special years in which I have been able to develop well. That has everything to do with the people of the club and the way of playing. In addition, I am having a great time and I can’t wait to play with Cambuur. To enter the Eredivisie,” Hoedemakers responded enthusiastically to the contract extension on Friday. The 23-year-old midfielder was taken over from Jong AZ on a rental basis in 2019, after which he made the final switch to the Frisian club in March 2020 with a contract until 2022.

In the past two seasons, Hoedemakers has become one of the most important players in the selection of trainer Henk de Jong. He scored 3 goals and 9 assists in 37 games in the Kitchen Champion Division last season. Cambuur eventually managed to achieve promotion to the Eredivisie as champion. Due to his good form, Hoedemakers could count on serious interest from Lecce, although that offer was resolutely rejected by Cambuur. Two clubs from the Eredivisie also showed interest, but there will be no more transfers this summer.

Opposite football zone Hoedemakers announced in April that he would ‘very much like’ to play in the Eredivisie. He considers that step necessary in his development, but also dares to look beyond the Eredivisie. “Of course. But I don’t necessarily think very far ahead. Match for match, that’s how I am in it. It would be great to be a good player in the Eredivisie and then take the next step. But yes, I do. guess you haven’t interviewed anyone here who says, ‘Well, it’s fine.'”
