Maurice Steijn will not be the new head coach of Go Ahead Eagles, the club assures General Daily Newspaper Thursday. The clubless coach was seriously considered to succeed the departing René Hake in Deventer, but has decided to leave Go Ahead alone.

Hake will continue as assistant to manager Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. The management of the Eagles would prefer a Dutch successor with experience, and Steijn fits that profile well. However, the Hague coach does not see an employment contract in De Adelaarshorst.

Wednesday was via RTV East known that Go Ahead had Steijn's name on a list. The club from Deventer also reviews the names of Marcel Keizer and Bas Sibum. Steijn's name can now be crossed off.

Paul Bosvelt, technical director of Go Ahead, responded to the names on Wednesday to the local broadcaster. “Initially you say: an experienced man, but we also have to see what is available,” the former midfielder explains. “I see those names passing by and they are not mentioned for nothing. They are logical names.”

Bosvelt also immediately crosses out a name. Hake's arrival at Manchester United coincides with Mitchell van der Gaag's departure from Old Trafford, but Erik ten Hag's departing assistant is not an option for Kowetaccording to Bosvelt.

“We hope to present a replacement as soon as possible. It has to be someone who can identify with the current working method, it would be crazy to change everything.”

Steijn and Ajax

Steijn was appointed to Ajax last summer. After a few dramatic and very turbulent months, he was fired. The Amsterdam club occupied the last place in the Eredivisie at that time. Under his successor John van 't Schip, the fifth place was still secured.
