Matthijs de Ligt is aiming for a departure from Juventus, Spanish journalist Xavi Campos reports in the program Our from Esport 3. The 21-year-old center-back is reportedly uncomfortable with the Italian superpower and has a favorite option when it comes to his future: Barcelona, according to Campos. De Ligt’s name was also associated with a transfer to Spain last week.
Juventus has had a disappointing season from a sporting point of view. La Vecchia Signora won the Coppa Italia, but had to leave the national title to Internazionale for the first time since 2011. Juventus secured a Champions League ticket on the last day of Serie A, because Napoli lost points against Hellas Verona. Nevertheless, De Ligt would now have decided that he wants to leave Juventus next summer, because he no longer feels at ease in Turin.
According to Campos, De Ligt has given signs that he wants to leave and his ‘favorite option’ is Barcelona. In the program El Chiringuito it was recently reported that Barcelona president Joan Laporta wants to add a so-called ‘top defender’ to the selection. The names then mentioned were those of De Ligt and Aymeric Laporte of Manchester City. The question is to what extent these two names are feasible for Barcelona, given the financial situation and the fact that both De Ligt (2024) and Laporte (2025) still have long-term contracts.
Two years ago, Barcelona was also emphatically in the market for De Ligt, who at the time chose to exchange Ajax for Juventus. Campos argues that the 21-year-old center-back’s entourage has already acknowledged that this was the wrong choice and that he should have chosen Barcelona better. De Ligt has added the Italian national title and the Coppa Italia to his palmares in the past two years and has played a total of 75 games for Juventus.
