Mats Wieffer will no longer play for Feyenoord this season, the club confirms through official channels. The 24-year-old midfielder is struggling with a thigh injury. “How quickly he can be deployed again depends on the further progress of his recovery,” Feyenoord said. It is therefore unclear whether he will be fit in time for the start of the European Championship with the Dutch national team.

Wieffer sustained the injury during training in the run-up to the cup final against NEC. The midfielder therefore sat in the stands while Feyenoord captured the fourteenth cup in club history. Last week's away match with Go Ahead Eagles (1-3) also passed him by.

“At the beginning of the week he felt something in his thigh. That seemed to go well. He trained yesterday (Saturday, ed.) with the expectation that he would reach the final, but when he passed a ball it hit the front of his thigh again. Then you cannot participate in the final,” Arne Slot said prior to the cup match with NEC ESPN.

The trainer will no longer have Wieffer at his disposal in his last matches as Feyenoord coach, against PEC Zwolle, NEC and Excelsior. The latter will hope that he is fit in time for the European Championships this summer. Colleague and teammate Quilindschy Hartman had to pull out of the final tournament due to a serious knee injury.

Wieffer, if fit, seems to be a certainty in the final European Championship selection of the Dutch national team. The Dutch start the European Championship with a match against Poland on June 16. France will be the opponent on June 21 and the group stage will end on June 25 with a match against Austria.

Possible top transfer

The nine-time international of the Dutch national team is one of the Feyenoord names that are associated with a top summer transfer. It is known that Atlético Madrid signed for him in the winter, but a transfer did not materialize.

Wieffer came over from city rival Excelsior in the summer of 2022 for only 575,000 euros and is, according to Transfer market now worth 27 million euros. The right leg will be stationed in South Rotterdam until mid-2027.
