Marten de Roon has to take place in the stands tonight during Montenegro – Netherlands. The Atalanta midfielder has been left out of the the Dutch squad by national coach Louis van Gaal. De Roon is the only the Dutch international of the 24-man selection who is not in the match selection. It is a new setback for De Roon, who also fell by the wayside during the last international match against Gibraltar (6-0).
Thirty-year-old De Roon was assured of a permanent base place in the Dutch under the previous national coaches Ronald Koeman and Frank de Boer. Unlike his predecessors, Van Gaal does not opt for two, but for one controlling midfielder. Frenkie de Jong is preferred in that position, while Georginio Wijnaldum and Davy Klaassen operate in a more attacking role.
Under Van Gaal, De Roon has so far not gone further than seven minutes in the Dutch. Tonight there will also be no playing minutes against the number 64 of the FIFA world ranking. Next Tuesday, the ex-player of Sparta Rotterdam and sc Heerenveen, among others, will get a new chance when Norway comes to visit De Kuip. While Van Gaal has a fit selection of 24 players tonight, Montenegro has to miss star player Stevan Jovetic. The Hertha BSC attacker has tested positive for corona and is therefore in quarantine.
