Mark van Bommel is the main candidate to start working as a trainer at VfL Wolfsburg, so reports BILD. According to the German boulevard newspaper, the current practice master of Wolfsburg, Oliver Glasner, is at odds with general manager Jörg Schmadtke. Van Bommel is seen as the ideal successor to Glasner and would even have spoken with the current number three of the Bundesliga in the autumn.

In Germany it has been known for some time that Glasner and Schmadtke have difficulty getting through one door. The trainer still has a contract until mid-2022, but can already leave next summer via an escape clause for less than five million euros. Glasner is said to be interested in a new challenge and is looking for a domestic transfer, as RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt all have to look for a new trainer for next season.

In the event of a departure from Glasner, Wolfsburg switches according to BILD on to Van Bommel. The first contact between the two parties is said to have taken place in the autumn, when the bad relationship between Glasner and Schmadtke became public. Van Bommel is out of work after he was fired from PSV in December 2019. That way he could start working immediately. Previously, Van Bommel was associated with a transfer to Bayern Munich, but that vacancy has now been filled by Julian Nagelsmann.

It would mean a return to the Bundesliga for Van Bommel, as he wore the Bayern shirt in the past four and a half years. After his active football career, he worked as an assistant coach with the Under-17 of the Dutch and was assistant coach to Bert van Marwijk with the national teams of Saudi Arabia and Australia. At PSV he was head coach of the highest youth teams and has been responsible for the A-selection from the summer of 2018. After disappointing results, he was fired in December 2019.
