Marc Overmars will soon have an exploratory conversation with Newcastle United, Valentijn Driessen assures. His colleague Mike Verweij from The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that the director of football affairs of Ajax is in the picture at the Premier League club to be in charge of the purchase policy.

“It will become concrete in any case that there will be talks in the short term,” Driessen said on Monday evening football talk on ESPN. The journalist emphasizes that this does not have to mean that Overmars will actually receive an offer from Newcastle United. “If we want to have someone in the Netherlands, you only talk to the person you want. But in England it’s something different, they talk to a number of candidates who are candidates. And Marc is one of them.”

Driessen knows that Overmars is open to a new challenge. “Of course you sometimes hear something,” said the journalist. “That is a great new challenge. He has now been at Ajax for ten years, he has shown all the tricks there. And he also knows that with Ajax he will never become the new Bayern Munich, or the new Paris Saint-Germain And therein ultimately lies his challenge, to possibly do the trick again with a step to another club, but then to get even higher.”

Newcastle United recently fell into the hands of a wealthy investment fund with a Saudi Arabian background. Newcastle’s new owners have sky-high ambitions and want to enter the transfer market as early as January. Due to his excellent track record at Ajax, Overmars is in the picture to lead that project in the northeast of England. Newcastle decided to fire Steve Bruce two weeks ago and are therefore also looking for a new manager at the same time.
