Manchester City beat Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday. The teams of Albert Stuivenberg, who replaced Mikel Arteta who was absent from corona, and Josep Guardiola seemed to keep each other at 1-1, but a goal from Rodri in minute 93 was the deciding factor in the Emirates Stadium: 1-2. Since April 2017, when 2-2, Arsenal has played every league game of the Citizens lost: ten defeats in ten Premier League matches. It was Manchester City’s eleventh league win in a row this season.

Guardiola’s face after the halftime signal sounded spoke volumes. The Manchester City manager was absolutely not happy with his team’s play. Arsenal had an excellent first half and kept the visitors in trouble. It was thanks to Ederson Moraes that the Londoners did not fall behind quickly. A save against Martin Ödegaard did not give Arsenal a desired penalty but a corner, even after the VAR took a closer look at the images.

After just over half an hour of play, Arsenal got a salary for working for good football. Kevin De Bruyne lost the ball, after which the home team moved play from right to left. A pass from Kieran Tierney was worked low into the right corner behind Ederson by Bukayo Saka: 1-0. Gabriel Martinelli had twice the chance to make it 2-0 before halftime, while the best chance for the visit in the first half came in the name of Rubén Dias. The defender’s effort went wide.

Manchester City came to 1-1 more than ten minutes after the break. Stuart Atwell saw nothing in Bernardo Silva’s crash against Granit Xhaka, but the VAR pointed out to the arbiter that the Swiss was on the Portuguese’s shirt. Atwell still pointed to the spot and Riyad Mahrez did not fail. It was thanks to Nathan Ake that Arsenal did not come 2-1 less than a minute later. After miscommunication in the defense, the Dutchman cleared the ball just before the goal line and the rebound was not for Martinelli.

It was a second half of extremes, as Arsenal ended up with ten men shortly afterwards. Less than two minutes after his first yellow card, for molesting the penalty spot just before the 1-1, Gabriel Magalhaes received his second card for obstructing Gabriel Jesus. Despite the under-count situation, Arsenal managed to resist and frustrate Manchester City with compact football. Deep in extra time the 1-2 fell: a rebound from Rodri after a blocked shot by Laporte ended up behind Aaron Ramsdale.

The late win put Manchester City now 11 points ahead of Chelsea and 12 points ahead of Liverpool. The competitors have played one and two games less respectively. The top match between Chelsea and Liverpool is scheduled for Sunday at Stamford Bridge. Initially, Leicester City – Norwich City was also on the program for today, but this match has been postponed because Norwich City has too few players available due to corona.
