Manchester United lost third place in the Premier League to Newcastle United on Sunday. Erik ten Hag’s team was not involved at all at St. James’ Park and left the field with a 2-0 defeat. Joe Willock and Callum Wilson both scored with heads. Newcastle take over third place from Man United on goal difference. The Ten Hag team still has a lead of four loss points over number five Tottenham Hotspur.

Marcus Rashford recovered in time from a minor injury and started at the front left at Manchester United. Wout Weghorst kept his place at the point of the attack, while Tyrell Malacia was placed on the bench. On the side of Newcastle, there was as usual a basic place for Sven Botman, who already started a crucial block slide in the sixth minute with a dangerous cross from Marcel Sabitzer.

From then on it was Newcastle that struck the clock. Man United had to go far backwards and was lucky that there was still a 0-0 score on the scoreboard at halftime. David de Gea made a miraculous save after fifteen minutes on a header from Alexander Isak and Joe Willock’s rebound from very close range. Seven minutes before the break, Allan Saint-Maximin, who played very menacingly, kept a fantastic overview by laying wide on Willock. The midfielder should have scored from close range, but fired just over the crossbar.

The game image did not change after the break. Newcastle continued to look for the attack and finally succeeded in the 65th minute. Bruno Guimarães’ cross was a bit too hard, but Saint-Maximin headed it back into the goal mouth, after which Willock was able to give the final push with his head from close range: 1-0. Fifteen minutes before the end, De Gea prevented worse for Man United by blocking a Joelinton header with the help of the crossbar. In the rebound, Fabian Schär headed the ball onto the post. The decision came two minutes before the end with another corner kick, which was headed in by Callum Wilson: 2-0.
