Yusuf Demir has played his last official game for Barcelona, reports Sport. The Catalans will no longer use the eighteen-year-old right winger, because otherwise a transfer fee of ten million euros will have to be transferred to Rapid Wien. That was agreed last summer in the lease that was concluded with the Austrian club.

Demir was billed as ‘the Austrian Lionel Messi’ but the youngster has failed to live up to expectations in Barcelona. The wing striker is on nine official appearances for Barça; at his tenth duel, the option to buy in the lease would be mandatory. With that, the Catalans would have to recruit the Austrian-Turkish attacker for ten million euros.

Barcelona is known to be facing huge financial problems and the question is what the club’s transfer budget will be in January. The club absolutely cannot use an expenditure of ten million euros for Demir and is therefore no longer expected to field the wing attacker. On Tuesday evening, Demir did play in the lost match for the Maradona Cup against Boca Juniors (1-1, loss after penalties). Friendly duels therefore do not count in the determination of the option to buy. Demir did not produce any goals or assists in nine official games for Barca.
