Olympiacos pulled off a huge upset in the Conference League on Thursday evening. The Greeks already seemed to be more or less eliminated after losing the first match against Maccabi Tel Aviv 1-4, but suddenly won the away match by even more margins: 1-6. As a result, Olympiacos secured the quarter-finals.

The diptych actually seemed decided last week. Partly thanks to two goals from former PSV player Eran Zahavi, Maccabi Tel Aviv triumphed 1-4 in Piraeus.

But on Thursday the Greeks suddenly turned things around completely. In Serbia, where the match was played because of the war between Israel and Hamas, he was already 0-3 ahead of Olympiacos at halftime.

Daniel Podence scored the opening goal with a shot into the short corner via the inside of the post, after which the same Portuguese scored the 0-2 goal for Kostas Fortounis with a good pass. Ayoub El Kaabi headed in the 0-3 – again on a pass from Podence.

After two matches the score was suddenly level again. However, Maccabi Tel Aviv came back ten minutes into the second half: Zahavi converted a penalty.

Then it was Olympiacos' turn again. El Kaabi made it 1-4 with a beautiful bicycle kick. The score was 5-5 over two matches, which meant extra time had to be played.

In that extra time, Olympiakos won the game, thanks to goals from Stevan Jovetic and Youssef El-Arabi: 1-6. A bizarre comeback was thus completed.
