Maarten Stekelenburg was absent from Ajax’s group training on Wednesday. In the run-up to the Eredivisie match against PEC Zwolle on Saturday, the selection was almost entirely present, but the goalkeeper did not train along. Furthermore, Mohamed Daramy, who came over from FC Copenhagen at the end of August, joined the Amsterdam ensemble for the first time.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper shone on the first training session after the international absence period. On the training images of Ajax TV you can see, among other things, how Remko Pasveer and Young Ajax goalie Charlie Setford completed the goalkeeper training. The reason for Stekelenburg’s absence has not been disclosed by Ajax. It is therefore still unclear whether he can be used for the away game against PEC. Stekelenburg was under the bar in every Eredivisie match of Ajax in the current season.

Besides Stekelenburg, third goalkeeper Jay Gorter was not present during the training session. The closing post, who came over from Go Ahead Eagles, was injured in the run-up to the meeting in the European Championship qualifying match between the Dutch Juniors and Young Moldova (3-0) and left the the Dutch selection immediately last Thursday to work on his recovery in Amsterdam. In addition, André Onana is still training with Young Ajax for the time being ‘in order not to disrupt the group process’, coach Erik ten Hag announced last week.

Furthermore, during training, the eyes were on Daramy, who reported to his teammates for the first time. The nineteen-year-old winger made his debut with the national team of Denmark last international period and made playing minutes in three games. Against Faroe Islands (0-1 win) he got a starting spot but was taken off halfway through; in the duels with Israel (5-0 win) and Scotland (2-0 win), he made thirteen and five minutes respectively. Daramy can make his debut against PEC in the shirt of Ajax.

The Dane was presented at the end of last month at Ajax without a shirt number, but it now seems clear that Daramy will play with number 18. The training images show that he is wearing clothes with the number in question. He would thus follow in the footsteps of Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, who wore the jersey number before his departure to Hertha BSC.
