Ajax cannot have Maarten Stekelenburg at its disposal on Wednesday evening against Sporting Portugal, reports Ajax Showtime based on sources at the club. The goalkeeper was missing on Saturday against PEC Zwolle (0-2 win) due to groin complaints, but seemed to have recovered in time for a starting spot against Sporting. “He is fit and fully recovered,” said Erik ten Hag at the press conference prior to the match, which starts at 9 p.m.

The first keeper of Ajax was relieved in Zwolle by Remko Pasveer and that scenario seems to be repeating itself in Estádio José Alvalade. Stekelenburg is not the only absentee at Ajax. As is known, Davy Klaassen is not part of the match selection due to groin complaints. Ten Hag did not want to say who Klaassen will be replaced as an attacking midfielder on Monday evening during the press conference. Against PEC, the coach chose Berghuis, who gave both assists during the 0-2 win.

Alternatives such as Zakaria Labyad (ill) and Mohammed Kudus (injured) cannot be used and therefore Berghuis again seems to be the most logical choice. Before the match, Ten Hag said that Nicolás Tagliafico is able to play ninety minutes, but that is according to the expectation of The Telegraph not happen. In the likely line-up that was published Wednesday morning, Daley Blind is in the left-back position.
