Ajax has handed out a new contract to Rico Speksnijder. The winger, who is only nineteen years old, is now tied to the Amsterdam club until mid-2025. Speksnijder's old contract with Ajax expired this summer. “I had a bit of a lump in my throat,” said the proud Ajax player.

“It's always nice to sign a new contract,” Speksnijder told the club after the formalities surrounding the agreement. Ajax TV. “I wanted to share this moment with all the precious people. They were and are always there for me. I just saw a tear in my mother's eye, that's very beautiful.”

Those emotions were also there with Speksnijder. “You could hear it a bit in my voice, I had a lump in my throat. The closer it came, the more I started to think about it. I'm glad it's over and that I can focus on the season.”

The young attacker wants nothing more than to succeed in Amsterdam. “Ajax has always been my club and that's what I'm going for. Last season started off well with my debut for Jong Ajax. After that it went a bit more difficult. It was an educational season for me, but in terms of minutes it has to be better next season. I'm going to do everything I can to achieve that.”

Speksnijder, who was taken over from the Feyenoord youth academy five years ago, has now played nineteen matches for Jong Ajax. The winger has not yet scored, although Speksnijder did provide an assist.

Speksnijder will be working with Frank Peereboom at Jong Ajax, whom he has worked with before as a trainer. “I think he is a great trainer. Everyone wants to go full throttle and everyone is fresh. I want to play as many minutes as possible and be important to the team.”
