The match between Atlético Madrid and Real Sociedad did not yield a winner on Sunday evening. The high flyers from LaLiga drew 2-2 in the Wanda Metropolitano; Atlético came back from a 0-2 deficit due to a double hit by Luis Suárez. Real Sociedad is currently in the lead in LaLiga, but has played one more game than pursuers Real Madrid and Sevilla.

Sociedad looked set to win an away game against Atlético for the first time since March 2013, but was disappointed. In the last half hour of the game, Suárez cleared the backlog of the home team. He first scored from a backward header into the right corner on a cross by João Félix, then struck from a penalty. When Suárez wanted to extend a ball, Mikel Merino planted his studs in his fibula. Arbitrator José Munuera Montero initially did not award a penalty, but came back after the intervention of the VAR. Then Suárez hit the right corner.

Atlético showed more threat in the second half than before halftime, when Diego Simeone’s team struggled to create opportunities. Sociedad opened the score in the seventh minute, after a smooth attack: Alexander Isak set Alexander Sörloth free in front of the goal with a tight pass, after which the former FC Groningen attacker made no mistake. Sociedad held on to the 0-1 lead quite easily in the remainder of the first half; a few minutes after the break it was 0-2. Isak shot a free kick from over 23 meters into the right corner, with a low shot that surprised goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Then Atlético came out better, which ultimately led to the comeback. There was then another dangerous moment in front of Atlético’s goal, when a shot from Sörloth was blocked by Felipe. There were no further chances, leaving Sociedad in the lead in LaLiga with 21 points. Pursuers Real Madrid and Sevilla have twenty minutes, but they do have a match credit. Atlético takes fourth place with eighteen points and has also played one game less than Sociedad.
