Marco van Basten questions the transfer fee of 25 million euros that Feyenoord receives from Benfica for Orkun Kökçü. According to him, the captain of the national champion would yield at least sixty million euros if he were under contract with Ajax. Van Basten also thinks it is not wise that Kökçü exchanges the Dutch league for the Portuguese Primeira Liga this summer.

“I think it’s not much money for Feyenoord, 25 million,” Van Basten said on Monday Rondo by Ziggo Sport clearly notice what he thinks of the transfer amount. “And if you see what the Portuguese normally earn on transfers, they now spend little on this transfer.” Presenter Wytse van der Goot points out that Feyenoord will receive 25 percent of the transfer rights, but that makes little impression on Van Basten. “You better be right, because you always have to wait for the other one.”

Van Basten believes that the arrival of Kökçü is a bargain for Benfica. “Because they sold those other players for 120, 150 million in the last three, four years, they should spend a little more.” Table mate Ruud Gullit thinks it is ‘a large amount’ for Feyenoord. “Ah no man”, Van Basten counters immediately. “It is just a very good player in the Netherlands. If such a player plays for Ajax, they will receive sixty million.” The former attacker then expresses his surprise at the step that 22-year-old Kökçü will make.

Not a step forward
“I don’t think it’s a good choice”, the captain of Feyenoord is given as a warning. “I think the Dutch league is equal to the Portuguese league. So what is his profit?” Van der Goot argues that Kökçü will enter the Champions League with champion Benfica. “That also happens at Feyenoord, doesn’t it?” Van Basten counters. “Do you go to a better club, that’s what it’s all about, right? Is there a better league in Portugal?” Gullit thinks Benfica is ‘a nice club’. “But I don’t think that’s an argument,” Van Basten remains skeptical about the transfer. “Feyenoord is also a big club in a big stadium. The competition is comparable, so tell me what the profit points are.”
