Perr Schuurs fulfills a role as bench seat at Ajax this season. However, the 22-year-old center defender remains confident and assumes that he will be featured more in Amsterdam in the second half of the season. “Of course I get a little less minutes than during the first period of last season”, Schuurs opens opposite Ajax TV.

In the first half of the 2020/21 season, Schuurs was firmly in the base at Ajax, but the quick breakthrough of Jurriën Timber has pushed the mandekker to the bench. This season, Schuurs was only three times in the starting line-up and he only made 361 minutes in total. “I’m trying to make steps in that to get better and that’s going well. I’m a team player and very happy with how we are doing at the moment. If you see how we are performing in the Champions League now, that’s something we can be very proud of. and which I am very happy with. Despite the fact that I play little, I often realize what kind of top club I play for.”

Last week against Besiktas (1-2 win), Erik ten Hag gave Schuurs a chance in the base. “At the final training, I heard that I would play a day in advance. He said that he would rotate a bit, opportunities for other guys. And that I could show it. The Champions League is a different stage than the competition, after all. “And it’s always nice to play there. Of course I also enjoyed it. It’s difficult to play the Champions League right away with little rhythm. In retrospect I’m just happy with my performance and certainly the three points.”

Schuurs knows that in most matches, however, he will be next to Ajax, including last Sunday against Sparta Rotterdam (0-1 victory). “I hope there are as many minutes as possible for me, but in the end the most important thing is that we win,” said the former Fortuna Sittard defender. “I am confident that there will be more minutes for me in the second half of the season. There are many games, so I hope to make more minutes.”
