Elseid Hysaj has been introduced to the Lazio supporters in recent days. The 27-year-old wing defender decided the song at his ‘hazing’ for the selection of the Romans Bella Ciao, made famous by the popular Netflix series La casa de papel, to be heard. That caused some annoying reactions on social media from the (extreme) right-wing supporters of Lazio.

It is apparently a tradition within the Lazio squad for a new player to sing a song in front of his new teammates. Hysaj came on a free transfer from Napoli and will be reunited in Rome with Maurizio Sarri, who previously worked with him at Empoli and in Naples. Images shared by Luis Alberto via social media show Hysaj singing the song standing from a chair. Bella Ciao sings. The other players at the table sing along.

Bella Ciao is originally an Italian battle song of partisans who opposed fascism and national socialism during the Second World War. By the Netflix series La Casa de papel the song became known again. The fact that Hysaj performed the song has not been well received by all fans of Lazio. Part of the Roman club’s supporters are known as (extreme) right-wing and therefore do not like to see a Lazio player perform a partisan song.

La Gazzetta dello Sport writes that Hysaj received the necessary insults from Lazio fans as a result of the video. “It might have been better to sing AS Roma’s club song,” the Italian sports newspaper quotes one of the responses. On the other hand, the video of the Albanian fullback is also frequently shared by another part of the supporters. With the video they point to the fact that Lazio and fascism are not connected.
