FC Twente was crowned champion in the Eredivisie Women on Sunday afternoon. Tommy Stroot’s team was 1-0 too strong for ADO Den Haag at home due to a late goal by Anna-Lena Stolze and saw PSV’s pursuer lose points against Ajax (3-2). Because of the victory, Twente can no longer be traced and director of amateur football Jan-Dirk van der Zee handed out the bowl to the team from Enschede.

Under the watchful eye of departing national coach Sarina Wiegman, ADO did everything to keep Twente from the championship. The team of trainer Sjaak Polak refused to participate in a title party and got the best opportunity of the match in the first half through Liz Rijsbergen, who found Daphne van Domselaar on her way. Then from Amsterdam came the good news for Twente that Ajax had taken the lead against PSV.

In the second half, Twente came out better and Fenna Kalma seemed to score the opening goal, but the attacker was unable to promote substitute Lynn Wilms’ cross to a goal. When the game appeared to be heading for a goalless draw, Stolze secured the win and the championship. The attacker was in the right place after a cross from Bente Jansen and hit hard and high in the roof of the goal.

PSV came back from a 1-0 deficit when visiting Ajax, but eventually had to bend 3-2 and is thus four points behind leader Twente with one round to go. It is the seventh time that the championship is seized for Twente. The Enschede team was twice the best in the BeNe League and five times in the Eredivisie.
