Cádiz requested on Wednesday evening by means of an official statement to temporarily shut down LaLiga. The Spanish club was disadvantaged against Elche in January when an opponent’s goal was approved, while it had preceded it offside. However, the goal was simply counted, after which the game ended in 1-1. Cádiz, currently number 16 in Spain, now wants LaLiga to be temporarily suspended until a solution is found for the incident.

On January 16, Cádiz took on Elche at home, which is currently dangling at the bottom of the LaLiga table. The home team was ahead for a long time due to an early goal from Brian Ocampo, but in the 81st minute Elche leveled through Ezequiel Ponce. The same Ponce had been narrowly offside a few seconds earlier, in the run-up to the goal. However, the VAR decided not to intervene, so the goal was counted: 1-1. That was also the final score.

Cádiz said it felt “seriously wronged” and made a request the next day: the result of the match and the goal should be annulled and the match should be restarted from minute 81, when the club was still at 1-0. was ahead. However, the Spanish Football Association did not agree and, according to Cádiz, stated that it was not authorized to deal with the request.

Cádiz has therefore announced new steps, said in a statement on Wednesday. “Cadiz has asked for precautionary measures to be taken, consisting of the temporary shutdown of LaLiga until the effective solution of the file is found by the competent authorities,” it reads. “In our conviction, based on the law, only with the adoption of the above precautionary measure can the damage inflicted on Cádiz be prevented from increasing and becoming irreparable.” The Spanish Football Federation has not yet responded.

VAR response
A few days after the game took place, the VAR on duty, Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva, already admitted his mistake in an open letter and apologized. “I feel anger, pain and annoyance in myself because of the mistake made,” he wrote, among other things. “The one who has lost the most is me.”
