The KNVB could have earned a maximum of 35 million euros at this European Championship, but after the elimination of the the Dutch in the eighth finals, it has to be satisfied with 15.75 million euros. The 0-2 defeat against the Czech Republic in Budapest also does the Netherlands no good with a view to the FIFA ranking. With a good European Championship, the number sixteen in the world seemed to have a chance of returning to the top ten in August, but due to the early elimination that is no longer a feasible card.

Qualifying for the European Championship earned the KNVB a starting premium of 9.25 million euros. In the group stage, Frank de Boer’s team won all three matches, worth 4.5 million euros. By reaching the eighth finals, the the Dutch earned another two million euros for the Dutch football association. If the Czech Republic had been defeated, another 3.25 million euros premium would have gone to the KNVB for reaching the quarterfinals.

As a result, the football association has to settle for an amount of 15.75 million euros. That amount could have been almost twenty million euros higher if the Netherlands had won the European Championship. Reaching the semi-finals yields five million euros, while the winner of the tournament receives a premium of ten million. The losing finalist will receive a bonus of seven million euros.

the Dutch was on paper favorite against the Czech Republic, the number forty in the FIFA ranking. Thanks to the victories in the group stage, the Netherlands climbed up the world ranking and is provisionally twelfth for the August ranking. That place seems untenable, as competitors such as Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and Croatia will be in action on Monday and Tuesday in the eighth finals.

The Dutch national team will return to action in September as part of the World Cup qualification. The away game against Norway is scheduled for September 1. Three days later, the home game against Montenegro follows, after which Turkey will visit on September 7. After three games, the the Dutch squad is in second place with six points, one point less than leader Turkey.
