Despite corona, the KNVB did not make a loss over the past 2020/21 season, the football association says on its website. As a result of the corona pandemic, the KNVB missed out on about 20 million euros, but thanks to incidental windfalls, the association ended up with a creditably positive result of 4.3 million euros.

Those windfalls mainly consisted of the departure of Ronald Koeman and the participation in the European Championship. The KNVB does not disclose financial details, but reportedly received a lump sum of around five million euros for Koeman. The national coach had a clause in his contract that allowed him to move to Barcelona, which happened last August. With its participation in the European championship, the KNVB also collected a considerable amount of prize money.

The football association says that regular business operations were in the red, however. “Thanks to incidental financial windfalls, the KNVB still arrived at a positive result of 4.3 million euros. Those windfalls included the transfer proceeds for former national coach Ronald Koeman at the start of the season and the participation in EURO 2020 at the end of the season. The NOW scheme was not used in these two quarters.”

The KNVB reports on its website that it did not expect a stabilization in the number of members. “During the corona time, the Dutch have started to exercise considerably less. It was therefore expected that the number of KNVB members would decrease. Especially since the amateurs were allowed to play very few matches, the canteens were often closed and club life was often at a low ebb,” the football association said. “Ultimately, the total membership base decreased from 1,179,933 in the 2019/’20 season to 1,157,479 members in the 2020/’21 season. This makes the KNVB still by far the largest sports association.”
