Serdar Gözübüyük has been appointed by the KNVB as referee for Sunday afternoon’s De Klassieker. The 37-year-old referee from Haarlem is supported in the Johan Cruijff ArenA by assistant referees Erwin Zeinstra and Johan Balder. Jeroen Manschot acts as fourth official, while video referee Pol van Boekel is assisted by Patrick Inia.

Gözübüyük refereed De Klassieker in De Kuip (1-1) last season in the Eredivisie. That was only the second edition of the match between rivals Feyenoord and Ajax for the referee in his career. Gözübüyük refereed his first Classic in the 2019/20 season in the Johan Cruijff ArenA (4-0). In the four editions that followed, Danny Makkelie was ultimately responsible three times. Dennis Higler had to steer the other Classic in the right direction.

Gözübüyük has been in charge of four games so far this season: three in the Eredivisie and one in the preliminary round of the Champions League. The Haarlemmer was the referee at Sparta Prague – FC Copenhagen in mid-August, while he was also ultimately responsible on the field at PSV – FC Utrecht (2-0), FC Twente – PEC Zwolle (3-1) and Sparta Rotterdam – NEC ( 1-1). Gözübüyük drew 21 yellow cards in those four games and pointed to the penalty spot twice. In his career so far, the manager led the Johan Cruijff Shield between Feyenoord and PSV in 2016/17 and 2018/19 and refereed the cup final between Willem II and Ajax (0-4) in the same season.
