If it were up to Kjell Scherpen, he will leave Ajax on a rental basis next summer. The 21-year-old goalkeeper gives in conversation with RTV Drenthe to know that he will have to play at the highest level for a year next season. Scherpen calls a temporary return to FC Emmen ‘absolutely an option’, provided the team of trainer Dick Lukkien succeeds in staying in the Eredivisie.

“I have to play for a whole season, at the highest level. That is the plan. Preferably in the Netherlands, because then I am also the best to follow for Ajax, although we do not exclude other countries ”, says Scherpen. Ajax took him away from FC Emmen in the summer of 2019, where he went through the youth academy. “Whether FC Emmen is an option? Absolutely. Emmen is certainly an option. It is of course a condition that they remain in the Eredivisie, but I have high hopes for that. ”

FC Emmen currently occupies sixteenth place in the Eredivisie, one point behind the virtually safe Willem II. Michael Verrips, hired from Sheffield United, is currently the first choice under the bar at FC Emmen. Lukkien also has access to Felix Wiedwald, Stefan van der Lei, Robin Jalving and Dennis Telgenkamp, although the latter has announced that it will stop at the end of the season.

Scherpen is hopeful that he is now in the national title and he will get some minutes at Ajax in the remainder of the season. “Of course I hope that I can play a few more games in the coming weeks now that we are champions. All the way in the run-up to the continuation of the European Championship with the Dutch Juniors. In any case, I will do my best for that ”, says Scherpen, who is proud of his first national title. “Fortunately I have been able to play two league games, which means I also have my share in the title. That makes it extra fun. ”
