Kenneth Perez does not have a good word left for the VAR at the match between Ajax and RKC Waalwijk. The Danish analyst finds it incomprehensible that a goal from the Amsterdammers was rejected in the first half after video referee Martin Pérez intervened.

Ajax appeared to be 2-0 ahead in the first half by Zakaria Labyad, who scored on Antony’s lead. While RKC were getting ready to kick off, referee Bas Nijhuis was advised to go to the screen along the field. Reason for the VAR’s intervention was a moment just before the goal, when Lisandro Martínez captured the ball. Nijhuis initially saw no foul in the Argentinean’s action against James Efmorfidis. After seeing the images, the arbiter decided to reject the goal and give RKC a free kick.

“Patronizing, that’s what the VAR has become,” Perez responds to FOX Sports. “You have to intervene when it’s really clear. In every duel and every goal, you can find something you might say: mwah, that might be an offense. That’s what you saw at Berghuis today, at that FC Twente goal. You can have somebody who says: he’s a little bit on his side, so disapprove of that goal. The VAR, please stay away.” Perez thinks the video referee should interfere a little less with the game. “This happens in every game and it’s gonna blow your mind.”

Colleague analyst Hedwiges Maduro agrees with Perez and thinks that the VAR should have intervened in case of an alleged handball by Melle Meulensteen. When Ajax attempted a goal, he kept the ball with his out, but the arbitration thought it wasn’t enough for a penalty kick. “I think so, otherwise it’s just a goal. He does have his hands behind his body. But it’s difficult,” concludes the old Ajaxied.
