Kees van Wonderen is in his final months as head coach of Go Ahead Eagles. The 52-year-old coach, who has an expiring contract, has decided to leave De Adelaarshorst after the end of this season. Van Wonderen has been associated with since 2020 as a trainer the Eagles. The number eleven in the Eredivisie will use the coming period to find a successor for him.

“The reason for this is actually not exciting,” explains Van Wonderen on the Go Ahead website on Friday. “Just as football players are sometimes ready for a new challenge, a new adventure, so will I next summer. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have a good time at Go Ahead Eagles, on the contrary. But you weigh everything carefully and listen I often base my choices on that, such as my departure as assistant national coach of the Dutch national team and taking up the position as head coach of Go Ahead Eagles in 2020.”

Earlier this year, Van Wonderen was promoted directly to the Eredivisie with Go Ahead. “Actually a kind of championship,” emphasizes the departing coach. “And at the moment we are all fully in the race for a new championship, in the form of maintenance in the Eredivisie. Even now that this is my last season at Go Ahead Eagles, the full focus remains on that. knows even a little that there is only one hundred percent dedication and focus for me.” Van Wonderen has little to say about his future. “I did think it was important to make my choice known to the club management in good time, so that they can look behind the scenes for a successor. That fits in with the pleasant way of working at Go Ahead Eagles: open to each other and understanding. for everyone’s position.”

Technical manager Paul Bosvelt thinks it is ‘a great pity’ that Van Wonderen has decided to leave Go Ahead. “But of course we respect his choice. I also think it is good that he is already providing clarity. We can use all the time in the search for a suitable successor. A wonderful challenge awaits us in the new year. Fortunately, we have also has to do with a trainer who will continue to do everything he can to complete his period at Go Ahead Eagles with a second top performance,” said Bosvelt.
