Juventus and Napoli shared the points in the Serie A on Thursday evening. La Vecchia Signora fell behind in the first half by a goal from Dries Mertens and was able to recover that after the break thanks to Federicho Chiesa: 1-1. Juventus, however, does not make much progress with a point and remains well behind the coveted Champions League places. Number three Napoli will not be satisfied either, as AC Milan walked further away thanks to a win against AS Roma (3-1).

Napoli experienced a chaotic preparation for the duel in Turin. According to guidelines from the ASL, a government agency similar to the Dutch GGD, Piotr Zielinski, Amir Rrahmani and Stanislav Lobotka had to be quarantined, but the three ‘just’ appeared at the kick-off. Hirving Lozano and Victor Osimhen were missing due to a corona infection, which freed up a spot in the rush hour for Mertens. Kalidou Koulibaly was absent due to Africa Cup commitments.

Juventus, with Matthijs de Ligt in the starting line-up, came out convincingly and saw Weston McKennie just wide of heads from a corner in the opening phase. However, Napoli soon took the upper hand and scored in the 23rd minute. Dries Mertens was able to hit from within the penalty area after Matteo Politano was replaced and saw that both Wojciech Szczesny and De Ligt did not intervene sufficiently on the goal line to prevent a goal: 0-1. In the remainder of the first half, Napoli became threatening via long shots from Piotr Zielinski and Mertens.

Nine minutes after the break, Juventus managed to force the equalizer. Federico Chiesa found a falling ball on the edge of the box and was lucky that his shot bounced off the body of Stanislav Lobotka and went in like this: 1-1. It was then evenly matched and both teams fired shots at goal. Mertens bumped into Szczesny from a difficult corner, while Chiesa fired hard at David Ospina from the rump. Moise Kean became dangerous in injury time with a header, but the Juve substitute aimed just over.
