Justin Bijlow has been suspended by UEFA for one game following his red card against IF Elfsborg on Thursday evening, Feyenoord announced on Friday. The goalkeeper had to enter the Conference League play-offs ten minutes before time after taking down the breakthrough Marokhy Ndione. Due to the suspension, Bijlow only misses the game with Elfsborg, which is scheduled for next Thursday.

Bijlow’s red card was a minor blemish on Feyenoord’s resounding 5-0 victory. Ten minutes before the end, the goalkeeper misjudged a deep ball, after which he felt compelled to take down the broken Ndione. Referee Craig Pawson showed no mercy and sent Bijlow off the field with a direct red card. Earlier in the game, Pawson had sent Frederik Holst off the field with an indirect red card.

Trainer Arne Slot joined after the game ESPN extensively on Bijlow’s red card. “I think Justin is trying to do everything not to have contact, but he is there. The ball goes to the side, but he gives cause for a red card. Fortunately it was already 5-0. If he could do it again he would probably stand by his goal and rely on his one-on-one skills, with two players chasing him, but well, at that point, I think he estimated that he would get to the ball in time to be.”

If Feyenoord defend the big lead in Sweden next week, Bijlow’s place will most likely be taken by Ofir Marciano. The Israeli also acted as a replacement on Thursday, making his official debut on behalf of Feyenoord. By the way, Bijlow can be used in the Eredivisie next weekend, as the suspension only applies to the Conference League. Feyenoord will play at home against Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
