Jürgen Klopp received a lot of praise on Sunday for the way he reacted to Andreas Christensen’s red card during the match between Liverpool and Chelsea. When the practice master noticed that his players applauded the red card, they were reprimanded by Klopp. The German was not at all pleased with the reaction of his players.

In the last minute of the first half Christensen received a yellow card from arbiter Paul Tierney. The defender was punished for knocking down Sadio Mané, who had been launched by a long ball from behind from Jordan Henderson. However, after watching the footage on the advice of the video referee, Tierney converted the yellow card into a direct red card: he felt that Mané, as a breakthrough player, had been prevented from scoring. It was the most striking moment of an otherwise quiet first half.

After the award of the red card, players from Liverpool, who were seated at a distance from each other in the stands, showed to be happy with the decision. According to journalist Laurens, who is in the stadium, the players clapped and ‘more or less celebrated’ that Christensen had to leave the field. Then Klopp turned to his own players, to admonish them: “Are you crazy? Really?! We never do that, okay?”

Almost everyone responded positively to Laurens’ tweet. “I hate Klopp, but this is class,” says one of the tweets. “On behalf of a Manchester United supporter, Klopp has class.” beIN Sports published footage of the moment, which was not picked up by the TV stations broadcasting the duel during the match. After the red card, Liverpool scored twice in the second half, making it currently 2-0 at Anfield.
