Arthur Melo’s transfer to Liverpool is in shambles. The Reds rent the 26-year-old Brazilian until the end of the season from Juventus, with the English not having stipulated a purchase option in the contract. Jürgen Klopp thus goes back on his words not to strengthen his selection this summer with a midfielder.
“It has to be the right player, not just any player. If we had the opportunity to get the right option, we would have done it a long time ago. We’ve had a lot of conversations and it doesn’t look like we’re going to do anything,” the Liverpool coach said more than three weeks ago. At the press conference prior to the home game against AFC Bournemouth (9-0) Klopp returned to those words. “Yes, I was the one who said we didn’t need a midfielder. You were right and I wasn’t. We are now looking for a midfielder.”
Arthur of Juventus has now turned out to be the right option. The 22-time Brazilian international, who is still under contract in Turin until mid-2025, is rented for one year. The midfielder has played less than a minute for Juventus this season. Even after Paul Pogba’s serious injury, Massimiliano Allegri did not call on him. The midfielder is the last transfer from Liverpool this summer.
