There was a lot of unrest in the Schilderwijk district of The Hague during the night from Saturday to Sunday, according to various media reports, including Broadcasting West. One journalist from the medium, Owen O'Brien, was himself pelted with heavy fireworks, he writes on X. Six people were arrested and several police officers were injured in the riots.

The Netherlands defeated Turkey 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the European Championship on Saturday night. Although the celebrations were peaceful in various places in the country, there were a number of problems in The Hague.

Rioters pelted police and journalists with heavy fireworks, among other things. According to Broadcasting West six arrests were made, including for throwing stones, fireworks and other items.

Police officers and members of the Royal Military Police were pelted with stones, fireworks and other items. There were also fires on the streets. Eventually, the Mobile Unit (ME) had to intervene to disperse crowds.

O'Brien also reports being pelted with fireworks. The journalist also speaks of 'huge chaos'. “At all the Turkish matches I have been welcomed by the community. Filming and taking photos went without any problems until yesterday.”

“A small group of troublemakers ruined it for the rest. Among other things, they used heavy fireworks towards journalists and threatened us with face coverings,” said the reporter, who was not injured.

It was not until around 00:45 that calm slowly returned to the Schilderswijk after the riot police and the Royal Marechaussee had carried out charges.
