FC Twente prevented a defeat at the last minute against Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday. Ron Jans’s team started weakly and trailed 0-2, but showed strength by fighting back to 2-2. The late equalizer came in the name of substitute Joshua Brenet, who did that with an unparalleled seventeen-meter marker. Twente remains firmly in fifth place, while Go Ahead can use the point in fourteenth place.
Twente was clearly the dominant match against Go Ahead, which succeeded well in not allowing any chances. The team from Deventer tried it themselves via Iñigo Córdoba, who saw his shot tapped away by Lars Unnerstall. Twente only made Go Ahead waver just before the break, when Michel Vlap cleared himself in the penalty area and fired just wide of the crossing.
Somewhat against the ratio, Go Ahead took the lead in the injury time of the first half. That was thanks to Isac Lidberg, who flawlessly found the far corner with a header from a corner kick by Philippe Rommens: 0-1. Twente ran into bigger problems three minutes after the break, when Córdoba tapped in the rebound: 0-2. This was preceded by a brilliant action by Ragnar Oratmangoen, who saw his shot being stopped by Unnerstall.
Twente pushed forward without playing well and forced the connecting goal fifteen minutes before the end. A bet by Vlap unfortunately bounced off Joris Kramer, who was credited with an own goal: 1-2. Twente kept pushing through Ramiz Zerrouki, who shot straight into the hands of Andries Noppert. Vlap wasted a better chance by heading wide.
The equalizer came after all thanks to Brenet, who surprised Noppert with a truly sublime marker – possibly intended as a cross: 2-2. Twente did everything they could and Ricky van Wolfswinkel missed the chance to win by tapping wide.
