Pep Guardiola has canceled his press conference ahead of Sunday’s Manchester City game against Newcastle United. According to English media, the coach first wants to know for sure whether or not he has corona in the run-up to the Premier League game.

Guardiola would not have received full clarity after an initial test. He has now requested a PCR test, according to, among other things Sky Sports. Guardiola traveled to Spain last week to attend a meeting where Sergio Aguero said he was stopping football due to heart problems. Aguero played under Guardiola at Manchester City until last season.

Five cancellations in Premier League

Guardiola lost his mother Carrió to the virus last April. She passed away at the age of 82. In England, the more contagious omikron variant is already a lot more widespread than in the Netherlands. However, the stadiums are still open to the public. Spectators must show a corona ticket.

The new corona wave that is currently engulfing Great Britain is also becoming an increasing problem for the Premier League. Five matches at the highest level have already been postponed for the coming weekend, because clubs can no longer assemble a full team due to the large number of infections. Several matches were previously cancelled, including the match between Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur that was to be played on Thursday evening.
