Joey Veerman must have been on a roller coaster in recent days. The midfielder seemed to be on his way to Feyenoord, but saw how PSV was a lot more decisive and snatched him away from the Rotterdam team. The people of Eindhoven made the first contact with the Frisian club on Sunday evening and presented Veerman on Tuesday. The midfielder thinks he knows why the current leader of the Eredivisie has chosen him.

“It went very quickly and PSV has picked up on that well. I am very happy with that,” Veerman told the club channel during his first interview as a PSV player. “John de Jong contacted my agents to ask what the situation was in terms of interest from other clubs. After that, the message came fairly quickly that the trainer wanted to speak to me, so that went very quickly. PSV is a very nice club, the number one in the Eredivisie. I didn’t have to think about it for very long.”

Veerman is happy that he has received his transfer to a Dutch top club, after he saw a transfer to AZ fall off last summer. “I think you play a top match at PSV every game, because you are first. You have to be prepared for that every week. Why Veerman and PSV are a good match? It is often said that Brabant and Volendam have something in common. I think that it is. You drive into the city here and it immediately looks like a close-knit community. We also have that in Volendam and that is also what I heard from Edwin Zoetebier.”

A month and a half ago, Veerman played against PSV as a player for Heerenveen, when the Frisians kept Roger Schmidt’s team at 1-1. “Then we could have been 0-4 behind at halftime. There were a few nice attacks in between. Then I thought: I wish I had been on the other side. Fortunately, we have now succeeded.” Veerman hopes to be able to contribute to PSV’s attacking game. “They think I’m dangerous towards sixteen, they want to bring creativity there. They have already done that quite well, but it is great that they have attracted me to contribute to that.”

“I was well received by the technical director (John de Jong, ed.) and Jan Vennegoor or Hesselink (technical manager, ed.). I am top fit, I have no problems at all. club is coming, but I hope to pick it up as soon as possible. And then we will go full throttle this month,” Veerman refers to the duels with FC Groningen and Ajax in January. PSV would initially travel to Marbella for a winter training camp, but will remain in Eindhoven due to a large number of corona infections.
