Jetro Willems may continue his career at the second Spanish level. Football International reports that the former Dutch international is training with CD Castellón, coached by Dick Schreuder.

The now thirty-year-old left back was under contract with Heracles Almelo last season, where he expired this summer and can now calmly look for a new employer.

Willems' future may lie in Spain, as Castellón is letting him train with them. If the trial period works out, a contract may be in the offing for the left-footer.

Willems joined Heracles in the summer of 2023 and started promisingly in Almelo. Willems was assured of a starting place, but as the season progressed he lost it.

In mid-March, Heracles announced that the option in Willems' contract would not be exercised. He has not been able to find a new employer in the meantime, but that may change soon.

If it comes from a collaboration, Willems will play his matches next season in the second level of Spain. Castellón managed to promote to LaLiga2 last year under the leadership of Schreuder by finishing first in his group in the third level.

The overall championship was not in the cards for Castellón, as Deportivo La Coruña, who finished first in the other group, proved too strong for Schreuder's team over two matches. Both matches were lost against the former stunt team from Galicia (2-1, 2-4).

Willems started his career with a storm and was called up for the 2012 European Championship as a teenager. However, he was unable to continue along that path and ended up at Heracles via PSV, Eintracht Frankfurt, Newcastle United, Greuther Fürth and FC Groningen.
