Jan Boskamp has some mild criticism of Virgil van Dijk. In the analyst's eyes, the captain of the Dutch national team should assert himself more during this European Championship. Two other defenders can count on praise.

“I think Nathan Aké plays consistently,” the former professional begins in the online section Coffee with Boskamp by Today Inside. “I also think Stefan de Vrij is at a consistent level. In principle, we have no problems at the back.”

Still, Van Dijk cannot completely charm Boskamp. “You expect Virgil to take the lead at the back. I think he has this aura at Liverpool of: I am here. He should have that with the Dutch national team too, but in my opinion he has less of that there.”

Boskamp indicates that he misses Mats Wieffer in midfield. The midfielder had to drop out injured for the European Championship in Germany. “I'm not saying that because of Feyenoord, but if you have Wieffer, then you have more duel power in midfield.”

“And then you also have more choice as a trainer,” he explains. “Because now you have Reijnders, Schouten, Veerman; they all want to get the ball. And Wieffer is one of those who does the dirty work. That's all I mean to say.”

The analyst does think that Schouten and Reijnders are currently doing excellently at the European Championship. “But in the semi-finals you get a strong opponent, and then you have to see if that midfield is strong enough.”

Boskamp then hears from reporter Joey Dekker that Switzerland or England will be the possible opponent of the Dutch team in the semi-finals, if Turkey is defeated on Saturday evening. “Jesus, then we're going to the final!”, he responds with a big smile on his face.
