Branco van den Boomen is not yet sure whether he will play for Ajax next season, he said in an interview with Ziggo Sport. After the won match against FK Vojvodina (1-0), the scorer of the only goal said he wanted to go for his chances, but that he did not yet know what would come his way.

For a long time it looked as if the first leg of the second preliminary round of the Europa League would end in a goalless draw, but just before the end Ajax took the lead. Mika Godts sent a cross to substitute Van den Boomen, who headed the ball in like a seasoned striker: 1-0.

“Today I was indeed a good header,” Van den Boomen reacted afterwards, looking back on his goal. “I grazed the ball and I think it went perfectly in at the far post. It was a really good goal, and from quite a distance too I think. Great striker’s goal.”

However, the Amsterdam midfielder does not seem entirely satisfied with his role. Van den Boomen started as a substitute and came on fifteen minutes before the end at the expense of Kenneth Taylor.

“Am I missing out? Well, if you're in the first fourteen or fifteen players and you come on, I don't think you're missing out. Today I'm indeed missing out on the first eleven. But that's football and not everyone can play. Let me put it this way: I think I'm good enough to play. There are more good players in my position and we'll see who will ultimately play the most minutes.”

Lille OSC would have approached Ajax for him, but that interest is no longer an issue at the moment. “There was something going on, but that was a while ago,” admits Van den Boomen, who incidentally does not yet know where his immediate future lies.

“What do I want myself? It's difficult to say now that I want to stay. I just have to look at the situation. Today I made minutes and I was important and I think we can create something beautiful here this season.”
