UEFA has announced the team of the European Championship. The European Football Association has had a team of sixteen observers assess the matches and, on that basis, have given the most decisive players a place of honour. Italy dominates the team with five players, followed by three from England. Belgium, Denmark and Spain all deliver one player.
Among the eleven chosen ones, we find Player of the European Championship Gianluigi Donnarumma. Italy’s goalkeeper was the big man in the final against England with two saved penalties. The 22-year-old goalkeeper thus took over the prize from Antoine Griezmann, who was chosen as the best player during the European Championship in 2016. Donnarumma is the first goalkeeper ever to be voted the best player in a European Championship. Pedri, who was named Best Young Player of the European Championship, has also made it to the UEFA team.
In addition to Donnarumma, the Team of the European Championship is home to four more Italians: Leonardo Bonucci, Leonardo Spinazzola, Jorginho and Federico Chiesa. The defense is completed alongside Bonucci and Spinazzola by losing finalists Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker. Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg can be found in midfield, while Chiesa is joined in the forefront by Raheem Sterling and Romelu Lukaku. “The technical observers opted for a 4-3-3 formation, one of the most used systems during the tournament,” explains the football association.

The team of observers consisted of sixteen members from different European countries, including Frans Hoek, Robbie Keane, Fabio Capello and David Moyes. Notable absentees from the Team of the European Championship are top scorers Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrik Schick. Both attack leaders managed to find the net five times this tournament and were therefore the most accurate. Ronaldo also equaled Ali Daei’s record of 109 international goals in this tournament, making it a memorable tournament for the Portuguese.
