Mike Verweij would find it strange in view of the arbitration case between Ajax and the family of Abdelhak Nouri if Ajax brings Christian Eriksen back to Amsterdam this summer. Internazionale’s attacking midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest in Denmark’s first European Championship match against Finland. He was then given an ICD, a subcutaneous defibrillator that intervenes in heart problems. In principle, he is not allowed to play in the Serie A. Eriksen has recently been linked to Ajax, although Verweij previously disproved that a return is currently under discussion.

“It was very emphatically associated with Ajax”, Verweij begins in Kick-Off, the football podcast of The Telegraph, about 29-year-old Eriksen, who previously played for Ajax between 2009 and 2013. “It may be that it will play at some point. But it would be very strange if Ajax went to get Christian Eriksen. No matter how much I would give it to Ajax or him, because he is a great football player. There will be an arbitration case between the Nouri family and Ajax, because they cannot agree on the compensation.”

“Ajax argues that he would never make it to the top again, even if he was treated well on the field. Then they also come up with examples such as Kyle Ebecilio and Evander Sno”, Verweij continues. In January it became clear that the Nouri family would initiate an arbitration case against Ajax, because no agreement could be found about the amount of compensation. Ajax has acknowledged that the treatment that Nouri received on the field in the Austrian Mayrhofen was inadequate and took responsibility, but neither parties came to a compensation settlement after that. “But then it’s crazy if you go get Eriksen and it turns out to be possible. Because then you knock the bottom out of your arbitration case.”

“Who gives him the chance? Because if you bring him in, the question is how long it will take”, Valentijn Driessen adds about Eriksen. “You may still have to pay for it. Do you bring it slow or fast? That boy isn’t the youngest anymore. You instinctively say: do it. A certain social function to someone you have trained yourself. Although he comes from Denmark, he has brought in a nice transfer fee and is a great sign for the club. I would have my doubts about it in sporting and business terms.”
