Mike van der Hoorn dropped out on Sunday evening during the FC Utrecht – Willem II (5-1) match. After a header duel with Willem II striker Wriedt, the defender went to the ground and seemed unconscious for a moment. Afterwards, trainer René Hake indicated that Van der Hoorn has been to the hospital for examination, but that there is no clarity about his situation yet.

Early in the second half, Van der Hoorn went to the ground after a header duel with Wriedt. The defender of FC Utrecht got his opponent’s head hard against the side of his head. Visibly shaken Van der Hoorn then lay on the field and for a while he seemed to have lost consciousness. After about five minutes of treatment, he was assisted by members of the field’s medical staff.

“That is not entirely clear”, Hake reacted after the big victory to Hans Kraay Jr.’s question about how Van der Hoorn is doing. “He went to the hospital with his family for an examination, so we have to wait and see. At such a moment the alarm bells go off for a while, but in the end we just have to wait and see. Hopefully it works out. When he left the field, he was conscious,” the trainer said ESPN.

“Looks like that, doesn’t it? He was also really out”, said reporter Milan van Dongen in the afterthought in conversation with analyst Marciano Vink. “It looked really good”, responded Vink. “He got it half way behind his temple, he was gone for a while. He had to be supported, this looked bad,” continued Vink, while images were shown of how Van der Hoorn went off the field. “I really hope it goes well. It took a long time for him to get down the stairs. So this really doesn’t look good.”
