Quincy Promes completed his transfer from Ajax to Spartak Moscow on Thursday, while he is suspected of a stabbing in the Netherlands. According to The Telegraph the Amsterdammers have been able to place the financial risk of a possible conviction of the 29-year-old attacker entirely on the Russians. Crime reporter John van den Heuvel explains what his transfer to Spartak means for the criminal case that is still pending against him.

The fact that Promes left the Netherlands for Russia does not mean very much for his criminal case, according to Van den Heuvel. “Promes was detained for a few days and then released without conditions. So he is free to come and go as he likes, ”the reporter said in a video posted on the newspaper’s website. “So it can also simply be transferred to Moscow, that has no influence.” According to Van den Heuvel, the police are still investigating. “Witnesses are still being questioned. The investigation has not yet been completed. If the Public Prosecution comes to the conclusion that there is sufficient evidence to start a criminal case against him, that he should go to court, then that is possible. ”

If Promes should appear in court in the Netherlands, he will receive a summons, according to Van den Heuvel. “It would be highly unwise for Quincy Promes if he did not comply with such a summons,” he says. “Because that could mean that he is seen internationally. I don’t think there is an extradition treaty with Russia, so there are some legal snags. But of course it would just be extremely stupid, because he will also have to travel with Spartak Moscow in the context of European competitions. Then he could be picked up anywhere. So when it comes to that, I think he will report properly to the police in the Netherlands. ”

According to Van den Heuvel, Spartak Moscow is taking ‘a relative risk’ by attracting Promes, which has been bought from Ajax for a minimum of 8.5 million euros and a maximum of 11 million euros. “The moment a conviction would be issued, it will always be considered how that punishment will be carried out. If it concerns a penalty with regard to service provision, it will be in a phase in which he is on vacation, for example. If it were an unconditional prison sentence, it will undoubtedly also take place during a period when he is, for example, free from his club. In general, this is taken into account, not only at Promes but also at other suspects. ”
