Gerald Sibon will still work at Almere City as an assistant to head coach Gertjan Verbeek. The former striker initially rejected an offer from the Keuken Kampioen Divisie club, because he had received an offer from Ajax. Sibon now tells in conversation with the Leeuwarder Courant that Ajax ‘didn’t really get along’ and that he wanted to get back to work, so that he now joins the technical staff of Almere City.

Due to the sudden departure of Jeroen Rijsdijk two weeks ago, Almere City had to look for a new assistant. Verbeek already worked at Adelaide United with Sibon, who previously worked as an assistant coach at sc Heerenveen. Initially, however, it was intended that Sibon would start working for Ajax. “Some clubs from China, Japan and the United Arab Emirates, among others, want to train youth football players according to the Ajax philosophy. It was the intention that I would do something for Ajax abroad.”

“That seemed like a very nice job to me. Not in the foreground, but I don’t need that either,” continues the former striker of FC Twente, Ajax, sc Heerenveen and PSV. “At Ajax there were some very interesting things in the pipeline. But in the end it didn’t really work out. At the same time, I really wanted to go back to work.”

It made Sibon decide to accept Almere City’s offer, where he will be the third assistant next to Tim Bakens and Serge van den Ban. “I’m happy to be back on the field. I want to get to know the guys and their qualities as soon as possible. We have to get to work, because Almere City has already dropped a few points”, concludes Sibon. Almere City started the competition with a 2-1 defeat against Jong AZ and a 1-1 draw against Jong FC Utrecht.
